I am going to get a physical in a few days(im 17)and would like to get a test to see if my testosterone levels are normal or not.But I need an excuse why....I have heard that it isnt uncommon for older men to get them,but at my age,I wonder if they would test me. If possible,try to answer one of the questions below 1.Can you give me a good reason to tell the doctor,why I would like to get a testosterone test done. 2.Do you guys no how much it will cost(something tells me it will be alot) ? 3.They have testosterone test that bodybuilders can take,do you guys know if these are effective in telling the right amount or not? 4.If the bodybuilders test are good in telling the amount(see q. 4)do you guys know where I can get one,without ordering it on the web. THANKS EVERYONE IN ADVANCE (NOTE:See my previos post(there are 2 of them)posted in November of 01,and if you can contribute any help,please do so.

I went in told my doctor that i was feeling weaker after exercising and that my erections were getting more difficult. I just flat out asked him to test my testosterone. Be sure that they do the more thorough test that gives "free testosterone", not just total testosterone. Some doctors are content to leave in the low end of the normal range, but i've read lots on the internet that for good health/heart/bone density/erections and all kinds of reasons, it's better to stay up in the 3/4 range. I once download some good info on what the numbers should be. I will try to find the link to that website and post it later. One more thing, insist on getting a RX for Androgel. I am 54, and been taking "T" for several years. Started with injections, but they give you highs and lows. Androgel is a nice clear gel that you put on after shower everyday, so your "T" levels stays more constant. It's GREAT stuff. I work out every day and after starting the hormone replacement, i started getting my muscles back that i had in college. AND my dick too. Merlin

You are concerned about cost, but if your physician give you an RX for it, your health insurance should pay for it. Mine does. Androgel comes in a 2.5 gram or a 5 gram packet. The 2.5 didn't quite get me up into the high end, so i just asked my doctor to up the dosage. Someone on this forum asked about applying it directly to the penis. I've tried it. Don't put it on your balls-it burns. I have not noticed any magical gain is size, but i've not been applying it that way very long. www.lef.org/protocols/prtcl-130c.shtml

Posts: 265 (01/03/02 21:49:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The thing is,I am not even 18 yet,and for some reason,I dont beleive the doctor will give me a test,unless I have a good reason why I should get it done (and truthfully,I have my reasons,but its not exactly medical terms note:see my 2 post in december to see what I mean).I realy beleive I am on the low end on the testosterone chart,but just hope the doctor will test me. Thanks in advanced P.S if you can answer the questions mentioned earlier,I would be grateful.

I think you should just ask your doctor if he will check it. There are all sorts of reasons to ask for it-low sex drive, erectile disfunction, general weakness. I also noticed that my pharmasist has the saliva hormone testing kits for approx. $100. They are supposed to be very accurate. I think you do the test, and then mail the samples to a lab somewhere. I have been tempted to do this test because it tells some things the blood test does not. Merlin

I found the info on the link about male hormones very interesting. I have absolutely no idea what my T level is. At 50, I don't feel anything "out of order" - in fact I feel very energetic, have good erections and the sex drive is better than ever... But the article says ANY man over 40 should take the hormone test to determine the T level. Do you think I should ask my doctor for the test? (I guess he would ask me why I want it...) or should I go on with my life and start worrying about it only if and when the sympthomes appear...? Thanks, WB

I was a little concerned about the forum that it might not come back. I'm lucky because i live in a small town and am friends with my doctor and pharmasist. I have learned that most doctors don't know a lot about the subject, but he wanted a printout of the info i got from the link i posted earlier. I think in the past it was acceptable to assume that it is a normal condition and to not treat it, but they have been doing hormone replacement for women for a long time. My pharmasist has been lots of help. He's about my age and i think he must be taking "T" himself. I was the first person to take Androgel, and he and my doctor both were very interested in how well it works. I'm glad that i don't have to just accept becoming an old man. My sexual functions are strong, but i have gained muscle mass, my chest, arms and legs feel tight and firm. Hey, if this stuff can keep me like this, i will keep on using it. You asked if you should have your hormone levels checked. I think it would be interesting to know if i were you. You might be fortunate and be in good shape. Apparently most men our age have a drop. I am considering having one of the saliva tests done. It tells you some things that the blood test doesn't. The saliva test is available on the internet or i can get it from my pharmasist. As you read about male hormone levels, it's interesting about all the factors concerning general health-not just the sexual effects. The list of benefits of being in the upper half of the range in encouraging. Some websites are selling snake oil, but there are some legitimate sites that have good medical info. You should feel good that you do not have the symptoms that a lot of guys our age have. If you are like me, you will want to know if you can make it better. Hey Romeo, excuse Will and I-we have not visited in a while. Romeo, i have not read your earlier post, but i think your best bet is being very open with your doctor-all he can say is no. If he does, then persue other sources, like the Internet avail. salive tests. I know $100 for a guy your age might be a bit much. The test will let you know what you should do next.
