The object is NOT to use HEAVY weights for relatively short periods of time (1-2hours/day).
I have learned that for real gains, it's far better to use lower weights, say 1 pound, for most of the day. Constant use of lower weight has been far more effective than hanging 8-10 pounds for just a few hours.
I have been using the knee strap and/or the weighted sleeve available at www.thegrip.com for a year and have gained just over an inch in length. Check out their website, look at the pictures, and make your own if you like... or buy theirs... both are relatively inexpensive.
Combined with jelquing twice daily, I have gained .55 inch in girth over the year.
